The laughter is often contagious, and we find ourselves cracking up as well. But there's a lot to consider about the ticklish response - this 'sode is all about dealing with these patients.
When we really think about it, if we subtract the laughter the tickle response looks an awful lot like a pain response. Contracting, pulling away, getting into a fetal or defensive position.
The tickle response is processed in the hypothalamus of the brain - the same place where the emotional threat response is processed.
Here are some techniques that can be extremely helpful with this patient population!
Use the anticipatory system to make sure the patient isn't surprised by the touch
Calm the nervous system using a variety of techniques
Start away from the area that is ticklish
